NECIC kicks off youth program

MANSFIELD -- Teens in need of things to do? North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC) has the answer. NECIC has announced the NECIC North End Teen Program aimed at youth in grades7 through 12.
"We started this program to increase activities and socialization for city youth, as well as to develop leadership and problem-solving skills, and build intergenerational relationships," said NECIC Community Organizer Kay Smith. "There is no charge to participate, and the program runs year-round."
"The best part is that the youth will have input, and will guide the entire program."
There will be an advisory team, made up of the teen participants, that will be tasked with planning relevant topics, speakers, and activities.
"We want them to have a sense of ownership, pride, and belonging," Smith said. The program is modeled after the successful North End Elder Program, currently in its 11th year. "We want to challenge teens to communicate outside of social media, enjoy fellowship, and see each other face-to-face by giving them a chance to say what they want to learn, and what kinds of activities they want to participate in."
Fitting in educational with fun activities gives youth the best of both worlds, she added.
"It's an opportunity to learn about yourself and your community, make connections, and even find job prospects."
The program is open to 7th through 12th grade youth in Mansfield City Schools and surrounding districts. Meetings will be held the first and third Thursday of each month, with a kickoff on July 26.
