Hallway of Hope brings community together at Ocie Hill Neighborhood Center

Mansfield - A local neighborhood center that has impacted the lives of hundreds of youths celebrated its revitalization Friday, June 29.

The Ocie Hill Neighborhood Center, 445 Bowman Street, invited members of the community to join the city of Mansfield Parks Department, Mayor Tim Theaker and community organizations in creating a "Hallway of Hope" using their handprints. Messages of hope were written under each bright hand print.

RCCS Director of Community Outreach and Programming, Tim Harless and Community Engagement Specialist, Brigitte Coles, left their prints on behalf of Richland County Children Services.

The hallway leads to the rooms where the Culliver Reading Center, Richland Outreach Center and game room are housed.

"Since November, the parks and recreation department has been working to bring the community organizations and local nonprofits into the building to make the building a neighborhood center," said department manager Mark Abrams.

Four nonprofit organizations are currently in the building they include Brandon Blake Hawkins Adult Care Services, the NAACP, the North End Community Improvement Collaborative and the Oasis of Love Church.

The parks and recreation department moved its office into the Ocie Hill building in late 2017.

Activities are held at the building five days a week including karate, soccer, basketball, wrestling and more.
