Twenty-nine Spanish Immersion School third-graders munched on pizza Thursday afternoon, thanks to the award-winning artwork of classmate Frida Rojas Martinez.

Frida's drawing won first place among more than 130 entries submitted in Richland County Children Services annual billboard and calendar contest. This year's theme was "A Safe, Supportive, Loving Family - What Does It Look Like to You?" The contest was open to all third-graders in Richland County.

Frida's drawing is displayed on a Children Services billboard on Park Avenue West near Arby's Restaurant. As the first-place winner, she received a certificate and a pizza party for her classmates.

Her drawing will be featured on the agency's 2018-2019 calendar along with those of three other Spanish Immersion third-graders whose drawings were judged to be among the top 12. They are Tyler Hubbard, Lauren Uhde and Lee Walter. A drawing by Lyndsey Schonauer, a Woodland Elementary third-grader, also was among the 12 selected for the calendar.

Two Mifflin Elementary School students were the overall second- and third-place contest winners. Ellie Powell received a certificate and a $50 gift card for second, while Tucker Keetle earned a certificate and a $25 gift card for third. Their work will appear on a billboard for foster care and kinship care.

"Richland County Children Services has a need for foster parents and we wanted to get the message out to our county," said Tim Harless, the agency's director of community outreach and programming. "The opportunity to have a youth draw a picture that represents their view of a safe and loving family is a perfect fit."

"The theme reflects on what makes their own families special and the diversity of families without our community."

The 2018-2019 calendar will be distributed at the Children Services booth during the annual Richland County Fair.
