ONTARIO - The annual Child Safety Identification Program "Safe Surfin”  is planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Richland Mall's Center Court.

This event is held in conjunction with the Lexington Moose Lodge #2511, the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio National Guard  and the 200th Red Horse Detachment 1 unit. Representatives from all local law enforcement agencies in Richland County are going to be on hand, including an FBI agent and a U.S. marshal.

During the free event, officers will take each child's information, fingerprints and pictures to put on a disc to give to the parents for safe-keeping.

No information on the child is kept by the officers, according to Mansfield police Capt. Shari Robertson.

There will be a police K-9 presentation by Mansfield police Officer Korey Kaufman and his partner Denise, doing demonstrations throughout the event, Sgt. John Ahles said.

Ahles said the reason the event is held is the majority of parents don't think about DNA or fingerprints should their child be kidnapped, runaway or go missing.

"Most parents, all they have is a picture," he said.

Ahles said the event is organized by the Lexington Moose Lodge No. 2511. The club has its own equipment and CDs and the event is at no cost to law enforcement.

Robertson said come out and meet the officers who protect your community on a daily basis.
