RCCS huge hit during annual Bicycle Days in Shelby
July 11, 2011Richland County Children Services was a huge hit this past weekend during the Shelby Bicycle Days.
The child protective services agency staffed its “tent” at the three-day event during all three days, handing out free popcorn, frisbees, water bottles, yo-yos and megaphones.
“We love taking part in community events like these,” said Carl Hunnell, the agency’s communications supervisor.
“It’s a great way to chat with local residents, interact with them in a positive way and to educate them about our agency and the many services it provides to protect children and strengthen families.”
The megaphones are always big hits with children and adults, he said. The agency fills the megaphone with popcorn when it's handed out. When the user has eaten all the popcorn, he simply takes off the bottom to the megaphone and it's ready for usage.
"The megaphone says, "Cheer for your children," which we think is a wonderful thing," Hunnell said. "We first used this giveaway during a youth soccer tournament, but it's good for any occasion."
The Shelby event kicked off the “busiest” time of the year for the agency in terms of community involvement.
RCCS will also participate in the Richland County Fair, the Blueberry Festival in Lexington and the Bellville Street fair. All of these events occur in the next two months.
“It’s summer, the weather is great and we can’t think of a better way to say ‘thank you’ to all of the communities and residents who support the agency’s efforts,” Hunnell said.
