Community partners participate in Survivors Speak

Representatives from the Minority Health and Wellness Project, Mansfield Memorial Homes, Mansfield UMADAOP and Richland County Children Services attend Survivors Speak Ohio 2019 at the Capitol Building in Columbus, Ohio. 

On Wednesday, March 20, hundreds of crime survivors from across Ohio gathered at the Capitol Building in Columbus for the state’s first Survivors Speak. Click here for Survivors Speak photo gallery.

Richland County Children Services was part of a group of community partners organized by Nyshia Brooks, CSSJ Mansfield Chapter Coordinator and Coordinator of Community Services with The Minority Health and Wellness Project.

The CSSJ Mansfield Chapter members who attended the event were Karla Hale, Cathy Hull, Marie Holbrook, Sondra Bryant, Sade Lang, Artise ‘Simba’ Anderson, Bernard Croom and Brigitte Coles.

The Mansfield group joined  state and community leaders in Ohio's capital for the inaugural Survivors Speak Ohio 2019. The event brings together crime   victims in the state to share their stories, honor loved ones, and advocate for smart policies that support recovery for survivors and improve public safety.

The gathering included a rally and healing vigil in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda. This is part of a national campaign of events  taking place in five states with local vigils in 40 cities.

Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ) founded Survivors Speak. CSSJ is a national network of crime      survivors joining together to create healing communities and shape public policy.

CSSJ is a flagship project of Alliance for Safety and Justice.

With over 25,000 members and growing, including chapters and leaders across the country, Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice is building a movement to heal together and promote policies that help the people and communities most harmed by crime and violence.

Survivors Speak will host conferences and community vigils in five state capitals - Austin, TX; Springfield, IL;   Sacramento, CA; Columbus, OH and Tallahassee, FL between February and April 2019. The Survivors Speak campaign will wrap up with healing vigils nationwide as part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in April.
