City of Ontario Proclaims Child Abuse Prevention Month

Ontario City Council issued a proclamation Wednesday designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the city.

The proclamation was read by Mayor Randy Hutchinson during the Ontario City Council meeting. Brigitte Coles, Community Engagement Specialist, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the agency.

The proclamation highlighted the reports of child abuse, neglect and dependency assessed by Richland County Children Services (RCCS) in 2017.

The public child welfare agency assessed 1,670 allegations and request for services, an average of five new cases per day in 2017.

Agency caseworkers were involved with 389 open and ongoing cases involving 773 local children. RCCS is now working with 143 Kinship families to assist 248 local children.

In their proclamation, the council also urged all citizens to support RCCS and its partners as they support each family's efforts to keep themselves and their children safe, healthy and in a nurturing environment.
